Yes. It is possible to astral project. In a hypothetical way, it is possible for everybody to astral project.
Before we go any further, I want to draw a distinction between astral projection and lucid dreaming.
Lucid dreaming is a deep meditative state where people achieve a deep calming state of their mind. In such a state they can observe the thoughts going through their mind. Thoughts are dimensional, they can create perceptions of site, taste, smell, and auditory perceptions. There are other dimensional is to thoughts also, the more one Explores the more one can find.
Lucid dreaming can create perceptions of different worlds, and different beings but they are dreaming states. They cannot be compared to astral projection.
Astral projection, on the other hand, is a projection of one's consciousness into different planes of existence. Here two things come into question:
First, is it a projection of one's consciousness or something else? Some people think it's a projection of one's soul. I do not want to go into details about this in this particular article. Let this be the subject of another article. But, during astral projection we project our consciousness, our whole being.
Second, do we have any control over the projection? In simple terms, can somebody die if they can't come back?
The answer is they actually don't leave in the true sense. When a radio station transmits, the signal reaches the destination, but the radio station doesn't physically don't travel there. It's not exactly the correct analogy, but something similar.
Is it possible to astral project without knowing?
It is generally believed in esoteric circles that we astral project during our sleep at night. When disturbed and we have to retract our consciousness, it takes approximately 2 - 5 seconds for a full retraction. However, it's not conscious, it happens as a natural phenomenon.
Feelings of falling from higher places, roaming in strange twilight zones and flying like a bird without wings are some of the indications of an astral projection.
These feeling may be pleasant or may be fearful, but they are the residual experience of a recent projection.
There is another type of projection where people project consciously, whenever they desire. These projections are not common. One has to prepare over a period of time to achieve this.
Is it possible to astral project while awake?
Yogis, esoteric masters, and people with special abilities can astral project at will. Whether it is day or night it hardly matters to them. They are so adept that they can astral project to different planes simultaneously. In plain words, they can be at 10 or 20 different places at a point of time. It sounds incredible because such people are so rare and hard to find.
You should because us with people those who have similar claims. Most of the time you'll be frustrated what you'll find when you cross check them. But this doesn't disprove that astral projection is not possible and it cannot be done during waking.
Is it possible to astral project with a friend?
Hypothetically this is possible too if your friend and you both are experts in this matter. There is a mention of such an instance in the book "Autobiography of a Yogi" by Paramahamsa Yogananda.
Some people may argue that there is no proof that whatever he mentioned is true. Maybe. But that is their problem. If you cannot believe something to be true it can never achieve it.
Then, how can we learn astral projection? Remember what Socrates told to the seeker of knowledge?
"The day you seek knowledge like you seek oxygen now, knowledge will automatically come to you."
So, seek earnestly, seek fervently, and seek with all your intentions. Even if you fail there is no shame. Better to aim high and fail rather than aim low and succeed.
